HOBART’S extensive network of parks and reserves are set to be a hive of activity over the next nine weeks.

The Hobart City Council has launched its new “Healthy Hobart” initiative, which comprises 21 free activities from February 16 to April 13.

The activities, designed in partnership with Healthy Tasmania, will range from group fitness events to come and try activities for sports such as rugby league and cricket, heritage walks, events for children and even skateboarding.

Helping deliver the event will be AFL stars from North Melbourne and NRL stars from the Melbourne Storm – who will next week kick it all off.

Hobart City Council’s parks and recreation chair Anna Reynolds said she hoped Hobartians would take up the activities.

“I think this is a really good new opportunity,” she said.

“It gives people a chance to do something that they’ve never done before and enjoy our wonderful parks.”

Keen to try his hand at some of the activities is star Tasmanian cricketer George Bailey, although the one event he wants to have a crack at might send scares through the Tigers camp.

“I’m really keen for skateboarding,” he said.

“I tried it when I was younger and the board went one way and I went the other way but now at the age of 34 I think there’s no better time to have another crack.

“They [the Cricket Tasmania medical staff] will be right with it I reckon.”
